Sturgeon City

Description

Sturgeon City in Jacksonville represents an inspiring environmental success story, transforming a former wastewater treatment plant into an innovative educational center focused on environmental conservation and community engagement. The approximately 11,000 square-foot facility features a 7,000 square-foot meeting space that can be partitioned into three classrooms, with seating for over 400 attendees. Visitors can explore the site via boardwalks that wind through restored wetlands, with educational signs explaining the Wilson Bay Initiative's successful river restoration efforts and the local ecosystem. The center offers unique educational experiences including summer learning programs for high school students focusing on marine biology, public safety, leadership and arts, as well as planetarium shows in an inflatable dome. As both an environmental triumph and educational resource, Sturgeon City embodies citizen action and government response in environmental restoration.
