Morehead City Public Library
Description
The Morehead City Public Library is run by the City of Morehead City, separate from the county library system, and gives families a free indoor stop downtown, one block from Bogue Sound. It is housed in the city's 1926 Municipal Building, a pale-yellow Florentine Renaissance-style landmark that once served as city hall, police station, and fire station. The lower level holds the children's room, with picture books, first readers, juvenile fiction, biography, and nonfiction, and the collection runs from board books through young adult titles for readers up to 18. A makerspace room stocked with board games, puzzles, LEGO, STEM kits, and craft supplies is open for drop-in play whenever the library is open. Kids may take home what they make, though LEGO and STEM kits stay in the room for others to build with, and children under 12 need an adult with them. The library offers children's programs for babies through elementary-age readers, and families with children from birth to five can join the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten reading challenge, which awards prizes at each 100-book milestone. The building is ADA accessible, with restrooms, public computers, Wi-Fi, meeting rooms, and on-site parking. Library cards are free and can be requested in person.
