Hammocks Beach State Park
Description
Hammocks Beach State Park encompasses a mainland area and three barrier islands, including the pristine four-mile-long Bear Island accessible by seasonal passenger ferry or private boat. The park features crystal-clear waters ideal for swimming and shelling, primitive camping sites for overnight adventures, and well-marked paddle trails ranging from 200 yards to over six miles. Visitors can explore the diverse ecology, including 204 bird species, endangered sea turtles, and maritime forests through hiking trails or guided kayak tours with on-site equipment rental from Paddle NC. The park's rich history dates back to 1914 when it was purchased as a vacation refuge and later donated in 1950 to create a sanctuary that was fully integrated following the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
