Fort Macon State Park combines rich Civil War history with beautiful beach recreation, centered around an impeccably restored 19th-century fort that offers daily guided tours and exciting cannon and musket demonstrations. This 389-acre state park features 1.5 miles of pristine Atlantic Ocean shoreline perfect for swimming, beachcombing, and wildlife observation, with lifeguard-protected areas during summer months. Families can explore the fort's 26 restored casemates, participate in educational programs designed for grades 6-8, and enjoy Civil War reenactments during summer months. The park offers excellent hiking opportunities along the 3.2-mile Elliot Coues Trail through maritime forest and salt marsh habitats, where visitors can spot some of the 300+ bird species found in the park. Additional amenities include picnic areas with grills and tables, outdoor showers, a seaside bathhouse, and restroom facilities, making it an ideal destination for full-day family outings that combine history, education, and beach recreation.
