Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center

At the eastern end of Harkers Island, the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center introduces families to the fishing, waterfowling, and community traditions of Down East Carteret County. The children's learning center has a hand-built reading skiff and activities about local wildlife, water quality, and weather. Galleries display workboats, fishing gear, decoys, and community history, and carvers demonstrate their craft in David's Room. Outside, Willow Pond's interpretive trails explore coastal birds and habitats. An elevator takes visitors to the Lookout Tower for views of Core Sound and Cape Lookout. The museum also offers children's programs and seasonal camps; check its calendar for dates. The Willow Pond trail is open dawn to dusk, beyond the museum's indoor hours. Children and students enter free, while general admission has a suggested $5 donation. On-site parking is free, and the museum is beside the Cape Lookout National Seashore Visitor Center.
