Cape Lookout National Seashore - Harkers Island Visitor Center

The Harkers Island Visitor Center is the mainland gateway to Cape Lookout National Seashore, on the eastern end of Harkers Island. Inside, families find exhibits on Portsmouth Village, island ecology, and the wild Shackleford Banks horses, an interactive park map, and the park film. The center hands out free Junior Ranger booklets and passport stamps, and has a bookstore, restrooms, and a picnic area. A kayak launch and an on-site ferry booth make it the jumping-off point for the seashore's beaches, the Cape Lookout Lighthouse, and Shackleford Banks. It is a major educational and outdoor destination in the otherwise remote Down East region.
